In 1976, during the family Thanksgiving
celebration, percussionist Kyle MacLowry picked up his first drumstick. As soon as the
tryptophan wore off there was no looking back. He has been playing and studying music ever
since. Starting out as a young drummer the original impetus to play was fueled by playing
in rock bands. Fortunately, a series of serendipitous events led him to study with Roberta
Washington. She was a jazz drummer and a well rounded percussionist from DC who helped
expand Kyles musical interests. He is a classically trained percussionist who received a
BM from the Oberlin Conservatory. It was there that he developed a love for modern chamber
music. During those years he also studied jazz vibraphone with Ted Piltzecker at the Aspen
Music Festival and North Indian Hand Drumming with Bob Becker. Several years after moving
to Portland in 1992 Kyle decided to get a graduate degree in percussion and began study
at Portland State University. Upon receiving a MM he realized that he had spent entirely
too much time in school and began to free lance and teach. He performs with many
orchestras and chamber groups in the Portland Metro area and teaches at several
local universities and colleges. Kyle dreams of one day finally building his
straw bale home and studio on his land in Southern Oregon. You can send Kyle an
